Sure, the state’s famous spots like Mackinac Island and Sleeping Bear Dunes get all the attention in Michigan, but there’s so much more that often goes unseen. Beyond those popular tourist hotspots lies a world of amusing and soothing destinations. The combination of these makes Michigan one of the most underrated travel spots in the country. This guide of unique travel finds in Michigan will open your eyes to hidden gems and the best local spots you need to check out!
The Secret Beaches of Michigan
When you think of Michigan, the Great Lakes probably come to mind. But did you know Michigan has some of the most serene and less-crowded beaches too? I can remember so many times showing up to a beach in Michigan and feeling like I could sprawl out fully with a blanket and chairs versus going to a Florida beach, for example, and struggling to find a good spot. While Traverse City and Saugatuck (Oval Beach is great) offer great beach vibes, you might want to check out Holland State Park too, known for its gorgeous sunsets and peaceful vibe, or the exquisite Silver Lake Sand Dunes (I’ve been to both). These amazing local beaches often fly under the radar but are perfect for a relaxing day by the water.
Highlight: Every Michigan beach at sunset is so darn pretty so maybe try to plan your visit later in the day to catch a breathtaking view.
Historic Appeal in Marquette
Tucked away in the Upper Peninsula, Marquette has a blend of natural beauty and rich history. Whether it’s hiking in Presque Isle Park or visiting the impressive Marquette Harbor Lighthouse, this town offers something for everyone to enjoy. And let’s not forget the food scene! Marquette is full of local brew houses and cozy cafés.
Highlight: If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, maybe try hiking the Iron Ore Heritage Trail for panoramic views and historical landmarks.
A Taste of the Past in Frankenmuth
Frankenmuth is a charming Bavarian-themed town that feels like it’s straight out of a European postcard (in some views and very “still Michigan” in some others haha). From Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland (the world’s largest Christmas store) to the traditional Zehnder’s chicken dinners, you’ll be transported Germany (kind of haha). I’ve visited Frankenmuth and stayed at the Hotel/Waterpark with the fam for a week or have just visited for an evening with my husband. Both were great experiences. As a kid, growing up and staying at the Bavarian Inn Lodge was so much fun. They have all these pools, an arcade room, indoor putt-putt golf; a kid’s dream place to be.
Highlight: Visit during the holidays for an especially magical experience, as the town is known for its festive decorations. Beautiful decor is everywhere and even ice sculptures line the street.
The Natural Beauty of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
If you haven’t experienced the awe-inspiring Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, you’re missing out. This spot, on the shores of Lake Superior, features stunning sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and crystal-clear waters. They will leave you speechless. Plus, you can enjoy this incredible landscape by taking a boat tour or hiking along the cliffs for a different perspective.
Highlight: For the best photo ops, hike the Chapel Loop Trail to capture Insta-gramable cliffs from a higher viewpoint. We talk about this more in a previous feature we did here.
A Hidden Wine Country: The Leelanau Peninsula
While Michigan’s wine scene is often overshadowed by California, the Leelanau Peninsula has become a favorite getaway for wine lovers. With its rolling hills and pleasant views of Lake Michigan, it’s home to several world-class wineries. Take a wine tour and experience some of Michigan’s finest wines, from reds to whites, with equally stunning backdrops at many. The whole upper northwest part of Michigan’s lower peninsula is full of amazing wineries (also check around Traverse City and Lake Charlevoix) so maybe extend the trip and stop into a few areas.
Highlight: Be sure to visit the wineries along the M-22 scenic byway for the best views and wine-tasting experiences.

Four Labs Beer & Cider in Petoskey, Michigan
The Quirks of Michigan’s Small Towns
Michigan is dotted with quaint small towns that have their distinct vibe. Take Petoskey, for example. It’s a small town with a large heart, and it’s full of surprises. It also has picturesque views of the bay and a nearby stat park.
Highlight: Don’t buy any jams, olive oil, or lake decor/sweatshirts before visiting because there will be plenty of stores that sell those things in every Michigan small town. I can almost guarantee it.
