I consider my self a coffee shop connoisseur of sorts and have visited a lot in my 5 years of working remotely. So many coffee shops in Metro Detroit have their own unique charm. Below you’ll find shops that offer ample seating to cowork, community, trendy vibes and more!
Dessert Oasis
Dessert Oasis is a brand of coffee shops with multiple locations around the city including downtown Detroit, Ferndale, Royal Oak, and Rochester. I’ve been to every location except Rochester and all offer a great space to cowork from. The music is always good for focusing, the staff is always friendly and the drinks are well made; they care about their coffee. Although Dessert is in the name, they do not have an extensive dessert menu compared to other coffee shops. But! They do have a handful of cheesecake flavors always available in addition to typical cafe bites. This Michigander is lactose-intolerant though so no cheesecake for me sadly. I end up going to a Dessert Oasis coffee shop most often.

The Red Hook
The Red Hook is also a chain that’s popped up around Metro Detroit including a very spacious location in Midtown. They offer baked goods, cafe drinks and even some more unique drinks like a Golden Milk Latte (which I get). Their Vegan Peanut Butter Bar is our favorite so highly recommend snagging one of those too. Most of their locations are smaller, more grab-and-go type establishments outside of the Midtown location. These smaller locations are in areas where you can walk around and visit other kinds of shops though so it’s still a win-win.

The Congregation
The Congregation holds a special place in my heart because you can tell it’s very supportive of the community it’s in; you feel right at home here. It’s also in an old church so there is plenty of cool architecture and stained glass to check out while your sipping on a drink. During the summer, they have a huge outdoor space for entertaining the masses and even host events like Drag Queen Bingo. They also serve food so it can function as a light brunch AND coffee spot as well.

The Gathering Coffee Co.
Similar to The Congregation, community is at the heart of The Gathering Coffee Co. It’s a philanthropic coffee company trying to create both change and sustainability not just for the shop, but the local community and companies they partner with too. They are in the North End neighborhood of Detroit which is gaining some traction in terms of development; I recently went to a yoga class at Hot Bones out that way too. They serve classic cafe drinks and baked goods like almond croissants, and offer an environment that makes you “never feel alone”. Which you’ll see in the shop is a key phrase in their branding.

Warda Pâtisserie
Warda is very unique in it’s drink and pastry offerings. The owner has been around the world and back and wants to deliver that international flare to Detroit. Serving fancy pastries that look like ones I’ve never seen before and cafe drinks like Hickory Lattes which taste like your drinking rich, dark chocolate (it’s also decaf which I love). The interior design of the shop also has an international flare to it too (in a lovely way). Check out my visit in a recent post:
