Finding things to do in Michigan can be hard when the weather gets too cold. But, here are a few ideas for fun things to do inside, outside and across the state. This post is particularly fitting as we are heading into the coldest part of Michigan winter as I type this.
Indoor Concerts & Games
Recently, I decided the day of to go see Doja Cat at Little Caesars Arena and it changed my whole perspective on big concerts. I used to not like them because I only saw ones where tickets where $300+ for nosebleed seats where you just watch the start perform on big screens. But, the tickets we got were not crazy expensive and we got amazing seats. I could feel the heat coming from the flames popping up periodically on stage. Going to a place like LCA for a hockey game or concert is also great because it’s so big and has everything you need (like a little indoor city).
Going to smaller venues like the Loving Touch in Ferndale, MI can also be fun. I visited there last to see Hellogoodbye and live out my preteen fantasy and had so much fun. You feel like your right up next to the musical acts there.
Hibernating At Home
Ignore your FOMO and just enjoy the great indoors at home. Winter can be a time for hibernating after crazy summer and holiday plans, so kick your feet up and watch the movies and shows you’ve been meaning to. I’m more go go go and my husband likes a bit more time relaxing at home so he’s really gotten me on the hibernating bandwagon more during winter and I love it.
Indoor Projects
While we are on the topic of homes, my parents shared a great tip for this post which was working on home projects. Winter in Michigan is the time to paint that accent wall you’ve been meaning to or redesign the bedroom to look like the one you saw on Pinterest. You’re probably not going to want to do these tasks when it’s 80 degrees and sunny outside, right? We actually just decided to invest in a sectional (big adult purchase I know) and I couldn’t be happier. It makes the space so much more cozy (for winter hibernating) and I love the new look it gives our living room too. We also painted an accent wall in our dining area last winter.
Michigan Travel
Even though it’s colder, you can still live your Michigan travel fantasy in the winter. One trip I’ve always wanted to make is heading up to a city very far up north, like Copper Harbor, to try and see the Northern Lights (which I’ve yet to see). If you wanna join me in this effort, I use this app to track aurora activity. Lots of towns across Michigan like Frankfort are great for Summer but are also great winter destinations to spice things up. I’ll be heading up to Boyne myself this winter for skiing which leads me into my next point…
Skiing In Michigan
I was always into sledding growing up, I enjoy wakeboarding on the lake, but I never went snow skiing growing up. Personally, it’s not for the faint of heart as it’s a lot to blaze down a hill so fast but I found it’s pretty darn fun. I first went skiing in New York with friends and it made me appreciate winter so much more. My husband went to Mount Holly last winter, and although he hurt is back going off a jump he probably shouldn’t have attempted, had a great time. This year, we decided to visit Boyne Mountain in Michigan and had any amazing time.
Working On Your Fitness
Throughout the winter I rarely feel truly warm. My hands and feet are always cold unless I’m in a sauna or when I’m working out! On top of feeling truly warm, working out also benefits your body and brain. It’s also just great to go to a space, maybe while there is a raging blizzard going on outside and stretch out, work up a sweat, and feel accomplished.
Planning Summer Travels
Everyone in Michigan knows that summertime is very important; because the weather is absolutely perfect for doing the most. This past year going into Summer though, I didn’t really have any plans. Although this wasn’t terrible and I ended up doing some amazing things, I was a tad jealous of my friends who planned their whole summer out and had so much to look forward to. So while your cooped up inside during winter, why not focus on making some plans to look forward to in summer!
